Kaolin or china clay is the common name for mineral products that consist wholly or mainly of the mineral kaolinite or aluminum silicate. This substance is an important industrial mineral compound. Kaolin is a layered silicate mineral that has a tetragonal sheet of silica (SiO) bonded to an octagonal sheet of alumina (AlO) through oxygen atoms. This compound is also known by other names such as kaolin, taraba and Chinese clay.
